Apache Belles Promote Children’s Literacy

by Jasilyn Schaefer

A crisp Fall day always makes me think of a hot cup of coffee and a good book, so what better way to spend a Saturday afternoon in November than with the Apache Belles at the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Tyler as they supported the first annual Wise Elementary Book Fair on November 14, 2009?

One of the three promises of Tyler Junior College is community service and the Apache Belles fulfill that in so many ways each year. This year they were invited to read to the children at Barnes and Noble from 2:00-2:30pm and to perform the TJC fight song and school song. The Apache Belles entertained all those in attendance by reading Giraffe’s Can’t Dance and Ballet Kitty. They taught the children how to make the Apache feathers and how to sing the alma mater of Tyler Junior College. The Belles also promoted the Spring Belle Babes workshop to take place on February 6, 2010.

This was an important event for Wise Elementary “15% today’s sales benefit the school and the funds are utilized to help teachers and our libraries with books in order to promote children’s literacy,” said Liza Autin, President of the Wise Elementary PTO. “We were honored to have the Tyler Junior College Apache Belles take part in our event. They provide a valuable service to our community and are a symbol of grace and strength,” commented Lisa Caudle, Co-President of the PTO. Mrs. Caudle is intimately familiar with the Apache Belle organization as her mother-in-law, Betty Maclin Dorough was an Apache Belle 1949-1950. Mrs. McLain was thrilled to see the Belles and have a chance to rekindle her ties to the organization.
